Bordeaux is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble. It has been recognised as a unique example of classical and neo-classical architectural trends with almost no stylistic rupture from the age of Enlightenment up to the first half of the twentieth century. In 1996 an exceptional urban project was launched which featured facade cleaning, river banks regeneration, and wireless tram lines. The rehabilitation of urban spaces was undertaken as well as the illustration of the will to protect and promote Bordeaux‘s heritage. As a result, there are more than 350 buildings listed on the inventory of the Monuments Historiques ( French National Trust), three of them being places of worship inscribed on the World Heritage Santiago de Compostela Pilgrimage route since 1996.
