README of VMWare-SL5.7 - Version du 10/04/2012 Geant4 V9.5.p01 --------------------------------------------------------------- ** What VmWare-SL5.7 is ------------------------ - A linux system validated on Intel architecture, with the Scientific Linux 5.7, 32 bits and 64 bits distribution (http://www.scientificlinux.org) - It contains several scientific libraries such as Geant4 Version 9.5.p01, OpenScientist, Root, ... a source code documentation generator tool Doxygen ** Requirements --------------- - at least VmWare Player-5.0 (free on Windows and linux) (http://www.vmware.com) - at least 1Go RAM for the virtual machine, the default memory can be changed in "Vmware Player/Troubleshoot/Change Memory Allocation .." - at least 15 Go of free disk space - a screen resolution of 1280*1024 (may be changed with root privileges) ** Downloads ------------ - Download the 3 zipped files SL5.7.zip, Home.zip, Softs.zip - Download the free software VMware-player-version.exe for Windows PC (current version 4.1.x), Vmware Fusion for MAC (http://www.vmware.com/fr/products/player/) - Download if needed the free software 7Zip if you need a free software to decompress these files : http://www.7-zip.org/ ** Installation --------------- - Install Vmware-player on your Windows system - Decompress the 3 zipped file .zip in a directory of a Windows partition - At the end you can then delete the zipped files ** How to use VmWare-SL5.7 with Geant4.9.5.p01 ---------------------------------------------- - Execute Vmware Player to open the virtual machine - Once your virtual machine is powered on, you have access to a real SL5 system - A default user account exists, the login account is: local1 and the password is: local1 The general environment is defined in the /usr/local/Env/SL5-32 file for the 32 bits version in the /usr/local/Env/SL5-64 file for the 64 bits version. The personal environment is defined in the /home/local1/.cshrc and can be completed in the /home/local1/.ucshrc - The root password is scilinux5.7 - The default keyboard is french (pc 105, fr) it can be changed in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file by a different keyboard with the root account. - TO SHARE FOLDERS WITH WINDOWS SYSTEM : It is possible to share folders between the Windows host and the Linux guest : activate the shared Folders in the VMware Player menu, select "Virtual machine setting" and then in the Option menu, select "Shared Folder", make sure the Always enabled option is selected, then Add to add a new share folder, there you can give a Name to your shared directory and select the Host Directory to share with the Browse button. Under your linux session, your exchange directory is located at /mnt/hgfs/Name_Of_Share - TO ADD A NEW DISK : Its is possible to add a new disk in your virtual machine if you need more space for data. To do this, select "Virtual machine setting" and then click Add.. button and then Hard Disk and Next, validate the choices and specify the size of the disk you want to create. After you have to create a new partition (under the linux session) and to format the disk (mke2fs -cjv /dev/sdxx).
